Vacations In The Dumfries And Galloway Town Of Stranraer

The nation of Scotland is a splendid place in which to take a short vacation. The nation great for an abundance of varied vacations, featuring large areas of graceful countryside with fine amounts of sites of outstanding natural beauty (perfect for hikers, hill-walkers, mountain climbers, ramblers and the likes). The nation also features some of the finest tourist attractions, including, some of the most highly interesting galleries and museums in Great Britain, striking spots, historical buildings, stately homes, castles and fortified houses plus a great deal more. In the following article I discuss the port of Stranraer.

The town of Stranraer is located in the south of Scotland in Dumfries & Galloway, the port is renowned for it being the place where you can catch the ferry over to Belfast in Northern Ireland. Sadly the majority of folk do not get to explore the visitor attractions in the surrounding countryside and Stranraer itself. This fact is a bit of an enigma, if you get to the town, and book a room in a bed and breakfast in Stranraer, a day or two early you could see some of the attractions prior to catching the ferry to Northern Ireland.

There are a number of things to see and do in Stranraer including the Castle of St John (a medieval tower house) found in the centre of town. The Castle of St John was erected at the very beginning of the 16th century as a home for Ninian Adair of Kilhurst, the Laird of Wigtownshire. The structure underwent renovation, during eighty eight/eighty nine, by the district council of Wigtown who made it available to the public in nineteen ninety.

Another attraction near to the town of Stranraer is the gardens of Castle Kennedy. The castle forms the centrepiece of the gardens which are situatedon a hill between 2 lochs (it is important to note that you are no longer allowed access to the ruined castle. The castle’s landscaped gardens extend across seventy five acres. If you would like it is possible to purchase plants from a store which has propagated them from plants and seeds from the garden.

Another stunning visitor attraction worth seeing is Glenluce Abbey, not too far from Stranraer. Even though it is in ruins (actually the most ruinous of three of monasteries situated in this region of Scotland) it has an incredible fifteenth century Chapter House. Other places worth taking the effort to visit include, Portpatrick, Port Logan, the Mull of Galloway and the Machars.

If you are thinking about taking a Scottish vacation you will be pleased to discover that there are lots of hotels in Stranraer. Please take a look at our extensive listings of Stranraer hotels and guest house accommodation.
